Dear all:
The site visit and the review of the TUNL research program went very well.
Overall the Panel was impressed with our accomplishments and the research
program. They found the proposed research compelling and the quantity,
quality and level of enthusiasm of our graduate students impressive.
Also, they were pleased with the fraction of our REU students who go on to
graduate school in physics.
Our ability to obtain high marks from a program review panel during these
highly competitive times for research funding reflects the scientific
creativity and ingenuity of the faculty and researchers at TUNL and the
high quality of our students and staff. The program presented to the
Panel during the 2-day site visit represented the work done my many people
over several years and the promise of projects to be carried out in the
next three years. We are clearly stronger than the sum of our parts. I am
grateful to all at TUNL for their hard work and commitment to excellence.
I acknowledge the extraordinary service of the following people during the
push at the end of the summer to complete the annual TUNL report and the
grant renewal proposal:
document editor: Connie Walker
copy editorials: Alex, Mohammad and Tyler
I thank all who participated in the site visit. The staff did a great job
in working with the research groups to make our research spaces
presentable. I am particularly pleased with the clean up of the tandem
lab; it is better shape than I've seen in the last two years. We owe much
credit to Chris Westerfeldt and Jeff Addison for the pulse of effort they
put in the tandem lab last week.
A special thanks to all presenters, to Alex and Mohammad for their help in
preparing for the review and to Brenda West for providing administrative
support.
Job well done!
Sincerely,
Calvin Howell
Director of TUNL
