11Li (80AJ01)(See the Isobar Diagram for 11Li)
11Li has been observed in the bombardment of iridium by 24 GeV
protons. Its mass excess is 40.94 ± 0.08 MeV
(TH75B). The cross section for its formation
is ~ 50 mb (TH76G). 11Li is bound: Eb
for break up into 9Li + 2n and 10Li + n are 158 ± 80 and 960 ±
250 keV, respectively [see (79AJ01) for discussions of the masses of
9Li and 10Li]. The half-life
of 11Li is 8.5 ± 0.2 msec (RO74R): it decays to neutron unstable states of
11Be [Pn = (60.8 ± 7.2)%: (RO74R)]. Since systematics suggest Jπ = 1/2- for 11Lig.s., the remainder
of the decay is presumably to 11Be*(0.32) (Jπ =
1/2-). Log ft = 5.0 (TH75B). (BA77N; theor.) suggest that the ground state of
11Li has large admixtures of higher configurations and that the mass of
11Li should be used with caution in mass equations. These calculations predict a large
fraction of high energy neutrons suggesting that the actual Pn is greater than 61%
(BA77N). See also (TO73G, HA74CC, 75AJ02) and (TA73E, BE75Q, JE75, IR76C; theor.).
