17N (71AJ02)(See Energy Level Diagrams for 17N) GENERAL: See also Table 17.1 [Table of Energy Levels] (in PDF or PS). Theory and reviews: (BA61F, GO62N, MA66BB, HI70A). Experimental papers: (VO62B, CI65, PO66G, AU67A, CA67T, AR68A, DO68B, AR69E).
The half-life of 17N is 4.14 ± 0.04 sec (KN48), 4.20 ± 0.08 sec (HI61), 4.16 ± 0.01 sec (DO65D), 4.17 ± 0.02 sec (ME70A): the mean of these values is 4.16 ± 0.01 sec. See also (59AJ76). The decay is primarily [~ 95% (SI64D)] to neutron unstable states of 17O, principally 17O*(4.55, 5.38, 5.94) [Jπ = 3/2-, 3/2- and 1/2-, respectively] (PE61B, GI63A). The ratio of the intensities of these delayed neutrons from 17O*(5.38) and 17O*(4.55) is 1.6 (PE61B). There are also weak branches to 17O*(0, 0.87, 3.06): see Table 17.2 (in PDF or PS) (SI64D). The character of the decay indicates Jπ = 1/2- for 17N(0). See also (MA65J, BE70E, HI70A).
Proton groups have been observed to many states in 17N: see Table 17.3 (in PDF or PS) (LI59A, HA65C, MC66A). See also (MO63J). Angular distributions have been measured at E(7Li) = 5 MeV to most of the states with Ex < 6.5 MeV (MC66A). Observed γ-transitions are displayed in Tables 17.3 (in PDF or PS) and 17.4 (in PDF or PS) (HA65C, TH69A). The mean lifetimes of 17N*(1.37, 1.91, 3.13, 3.21) are, respectively, < 0.2, > 0.5, < 0.3 and > 0.3 psec, suggesting J ≤ 3/2 for 17N*(1.37) and J ≥ 5/2 for 17N*(1.91) (TH69A). See also (CA65E, CA67S).

Alpha-particle groups corresponding to 17N states with Ex < 5.9 MeV are displayed in Table 17.3 (in PDF or PS) ((JA60C), A.D.W. Jones, private communication). Angular distributions to most of these have been measured at Et = 12.9 MeV (JO68B, JO69L): the spectroscopic strength of the transition to 17N*(5.52) is equal to that of the ground state: it is probably the p3/2 hole state.
