1. (a) 17N(β-)17O* --> 16O + n Qm = 4.536
(b) 17N(β-)17O Qm = 8.682

The half-life of 17N is 4.169 ± 0.008 sec (AL72M): the mean of earlier values (see (71AJ02)) was 4.16 ± 0.01 sec. See also (FI76A). The decay is principally [see Table 17.2 (in PDF or PS)] to the neutron unbound states 17O*(4.55, 5.38, 5.94) [Jπ = 3/2-, 3/2- and 1/2-, respectively]. The nature of the decay is in agreement with Jπ = 1/2- for 17Ng.s. (PO73D, AL76). For measurements of the neutron energies see (PO73D). Excitation energies of 17O states have been determined by (PO73D) from En [e.g., 4.552 ± 0.004 MeV] and by (AL76). From Eγ to the first excited state whose Ex was taken to be 870.8 ± 0.2 keV, Ex for the second excited state of 17O is 3055.2 ± 0.3 keV; the direct ground state decay of that state is < 1.5% (AL76). 3. 11B(7Li, p)17N Qm = 8.416

Proton groups and γ-rays have been studied by several groups: see Tables 17.4 (in PDF or PS) and 17.5 (in PDF or PS). Angular distributions of γ-rays, branching ratio and lifetime measurements lead to most of the Jπ shown in these two tables; transition energies have also been very accurately determined (RO74J, RO74K). Alpha particle groups corresponding to 17N states with Ex < 4.3 MeV have been studied by (JA60C): see Table 17.3 (in PDF or PS) in (71AJ02). (GU76D: Et = 3.5 MeV) have studied α - γ angular correlations and γ-branching ratios for the first six excited states of 17N: see Tables 17.4 (in PDF or PS) and 17.5 (in PDF or PS).
